The Colorado Choir

American premiere, 'Requiem of Reconciliation'(eight movements). An inaugural event for the new Kenneth King Academic and
Performing Arts Center, University of Colorado, Denver, March 23-24, 2001.

The Colorado Choir, founded in 1976, is one of the most dynamic influences in the Colorado music scene. In its history, it has presented more than fifty performances with the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Today the choir specializes in performing the significant compositions for a cappella choir. In 1995, the choir performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra in McNichols Arena in Denver and shortly thereafter was invited to perform with pop star Celine Dion at Red Rocks outdoor amphitheater. The choir is often extended similar invitations and accepts them when possible. The choir has sung the National Anthem to open games for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. While principally an a cappella choir, the group does perform accompanied works as well as occasional major works with orchestra. It records every spring for compact disc reproduction.

The Colorado Choir is a nonprofit organization with a membership of 90-110 selected singers. Its board of directors is elected from among the choir membership and carries on the business of the choir, as the organization has no paid staff. The singers are from all ages and voice classifications. Many are music professionals, church and school choir directors and semi-professional singers. The Colorado Choir is well-known for its unparalleled well-rehearsed, clean, rich musical sound.

The choir has been fully self-supporting as a matter of artistic principle and only recently began a fundraising campaign for purposes of realizing its exciting millennium project, the American premiere of one of the most important pieces of this century for orchestra, choir and soloists. The 'Requiem of Reconciliation' is discussed in more detail elsewhere on this website.

Patricia Cottrell, pianist, has played for The Colorado Choir for 19 years. A native Denverite, Pat studied at the University of Denver's Lamont School of music, where she received both her undergraduate (BmuEd-piano/violin) and graduate (MA-piano performance) degrees.
